The Power Company, Columbia, South Carolina’s own professional contemporary dance company in residence at Columbia College joins forces with the VON HOWARD PROJECT.

Under the artistic direction of Columbia College professor Martha Brim, The Power Company was founded in 2000. Since, the company has performed, created choreographic works, and taught dance throughout South Carolina and beyond. Also in 2000 The Power Company began an association with Christian von Howard who has worked with the company since, even after moving to NYC where he began the VON HOWARD PROJECT in 2005.

Associate Power Company member, Christian von Howard directs the seven-member VON HOWARD PROJECT based in New York City.

THE PROGRAM
The two companies plan a beautiful blend of choreographic works to present on the Making Waves premier concert. Among these, A Balance Sublime is one of ,The Power Company’s signature works choreographed by Martha Brim. This piece can best be described as a tea party out of control and is choreographed to a suite of Bagatelles composed by 19th century composer, Antonin Dvorak. The Wonderful Thing choreographed by Power Company associate member, Lisa Wheeler, who is also based in New York City, will make its premier on this concert. The Wonderful Thing draws from Henrick Ibsen’s “A Doll’s House” and considers the play’s issues through a contemporary movement lens. Originally commissioned by The Power Company in 2000, Rapid Eye Movement, was choreographed by members of NYC’s 1*4*8 The Collective. The Power Company has restaged the mysterious and physically demanding piece for Making Waves. The VON HOWARD PROJECT will present three pieces all choreographed by Christian von Howard. Turbulence is a piece of driving choreography performed by seven of VON HOWARD PROJECT’s dancers and set to a powerful musical composition by the Kodo Drummers. 12X7, set to an original composition by NYC percussionist and composer, Tigger Benford, is a playful dance full of dynamic and rhythmic surprise. Set to the music of Prince, Climbing is a powerfully telling duet exploring the power struggle between two people as they make a somewhat never ending journey through their relationship. Finally Le Grande Waltz, choreographed and performed by directors Brim and Howard, brings the two together in a choreographic confection filled with fun and passion. This piece, set to a Chopin waltz, will sweep the audience off their seats. THE PHILOSOPHY
The Power Company believes power can be found in art, dancing, and the spirit of each individual. The name and slogan, "The Power Company - moving people" embraces the idea of power for all people. The Power Company invites you to join them in tapping the most precious source of power, energy and light for the mind and spirit of all people. The Power Company. and the Cultural Council of Georgetown County are supported in part by the South Carolina Arts Commission which receives funding from the National Endowment for the Arts.

CJD Information
CJD is a degenerative and fatal brain disorder. Patients have rapidly progressive dementia, experience problems with muscular coordination, and have personality changes. As the disease rapidly progresses, mental impairment becomes severe, involuntary muscle jerks develop and a CJD patient loses the ability to move and speak. A person with this disease can appear to be going about their normal activities; but as the disease develops a CJD patient can die in less than six weeks.

About the Foundation
The Linda Sirmon Foundation was created after Litchfield resident Linda Sirmon died of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD), a degenerative, fatal brain disorder. Bill Sirmon, Linda's husband, setup the foundation to raise money for research and education on the disease.

Through Terpsichore II, Sirmon has created an exciting event where people can enjoy themselves through dance (like his wife did) and obtain information about the disease, all while raising money for important research, potentially life saving.
